UV Disinfection

UV Water Purification Installation
Chemical-Free Disinfection

Worried about bacteria in your well water or a private supply? Our plumbers install ultraviolet purification systems that disinfect water without chemicals, sized and pretreated to work as certified.

How UV Works

UV Water Purification Installation for Microbiologically Safe Water

An ultraviolet system passes water through a stainless steel chamber around a lamp protected by a quartz sleeve. UV-C light at the right dose damages the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, so they can’t reproduce and cause illness. Nothing is added to the water, so there’s no chemical taste, no byproducts and no change to the minerals or pH your household is used to drinking.

UV is a disinfection step, not a filter. It doesn’t remove sediment, iron, hardness, lead, nitrates or chemicals, and it provides no lasting residual once water leaves the chamber. It’s most commonly installed on private wells, springs and other untreated sources, and sometimes on city water as an extra safeguard. Because UV must reach every microorganism, water clarity matters enormously, which is why pretreatment is often part of a UV water purification installation.

UV Services

UV Purification Services We Offer

We install and maintain ultraviolet disinfection systems for homes, cabins and small commercial properties on well and city water, including flow sizing, sediment pretreatment, alarm monitoring and initial plumbing system disinfection where needed.

System Sizing

Size UV systems for peak flow and the required disinfection dose.

Pretreatment

Install sediment, iron or softening equipment so UV light penetrates clearly.

Well Systems

Install UV on private wells after the pressure tank and treatment equipment.

Alarm Monitoring

Install systems with UV sensors and alarms that warn when output drops.

Lamp Service

Replace lamps annually and clean or replace quartz sleeves as needed.

Plumbing Disinfection

Shock chlorinate household piping after installation when contamination was present.

Water Clarity

Why Pretreatment Matters Before Your Ultraviolet Disinfection System

Ultraviolet light only works when it reaches microorganisms directly. Sediment particles can shield bacteria from the light, while iron, manganese and hardness minerals coat the quartz sleeve over time, steadily reducing how much UV reaches the water. Color and tannins absorb UV energy too. Manufacturers specify water quality limits for their systems, and exceeding those limits can leave water inadequately disinfected even though the lamp appears to be working normally inside.

That’s why a sediment filter is typically installed ahead of every UV unit, often down to five microns or finer. Where testing shows high iron, manganese or hardness, an iron filter or water softener may be needed first. Water should also be tested for UV transmittance in some cases, especially with surface water or tannins. We test your water and design the treatment sequence, so the UV system receives water clear enough to disinfect properly.

Why Choose Us

Why Customers Choose Our UV Installation

We treat UV as part of a complete system, not a box bolted onto a pipe. Before choosing equipment, our licensed and insured plumbers sample the supply, calculate peak flow and choose units certified under NSF/ANSI 55 where appropriate. We install the right pretreatment, position UV after the pressure tank and other equipment and add bypass valves for service. Systems are wired to dedicated outlets, and we explain lamp, sleeve and alarm maintenance clearly before leaving.

Benefits of UV Water Purification

UV disinfection inactivates bacteria, viruses and chlorine-resistant protozoa without adding chemicals. It doesn’t change taste, odor, pH or minerals, so your water tastes just the same. There are no disinfection byproducts and no chemicals to store or handle. Operating costs are low, mainly electricity and an annual lamp. And for well owners, UV provides continuous protection between periodic bacterial tests, rather than relying on occasional shock chlorination alone for safety.

Maintaining a UV System So It Keeps Working

A UV lamp can glow brightly while producing too little ultraviolet energy to disinfect. Routine maintenance is what keeps protection reliable.

Most manufacturers recommend replacing the lamp every year, because UV output declines with use even when visible light remains. The quartz sleeve should be inspected and cleaned at the same time, since mineral film blocks UV. Sleeves are eventually replaced when etching or clouding won’t clean off.

Sediment pre-filters should be changed on schedule, and the system should stay powered continuously. After power outages, lamp changes or plumbing work, some manufacturers recommend flushing and disinfecting downstream plumbing. Periodic bacterial testing confirms the system is working. We set reminders so lamp service happens on time.

How Our UV Purification Installation Works

We test your water for bacteria, iron, manganese, hardness and turbidity, then measure peak flow to size the UV system correctly.

You’ll receive a recommendation for the UV unit, required pretreatment, installation location and cost. On installation day, we install pretreatment first, then mount the UV chamber after the pressure tank and other equipment, with a bypass valve and enough clearance to remove the lamp and sleeve.

The system is connected to a dedicated outlet, the lamp is installed and allowed to warm up and water flow is restored. If bacteria were present, household plumbing is disinfected as recommended. We confirm the alarm works, check for leaks and recommend follow-up bacterial testing to verify results.

Frequently Asked Questions

UV Water Purification Questions Answered

Have Any Question on Your Minds?
What does UV water purification kill?

Properly sized UV inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, but it doesn’t remove chemicals, metals or sediment.

Yes. A sediment pre-filter is standard, and iron, manganese or hardness may need additional treatment so UV light reaches microorganisms.

Typically once a year. Germicidal output fades with operating hours while visible light remains, so a yearly lamp change keeps disinfection reliable.

No. UV adds nothing to the water and doesn’t alter minerals, pH, taste or odor, unlike chlorine-based disinfection methods many people dislike.

Residential UV systems use roughly as much power as a standard light bulb, running continuously to keep the lamp ready for flow.
