Shower Valve Replacement
Safer, Modern Temperature Control

Old shower valve corroded, discontinued or missing anti-scald protection? Our plumbers replace shower valves with modern pressure-balance or thermostatic models while minimizing damage to your tile.

New Valves

Shower Valve Replacement When Repair Is No Longer the Answer

Most shower valve problems can be repaired with new internal parts, but sometimes replacing the entire valve body is the better choice. Parts for older or obscure brands may no longer be available. The brass body may be corroded or cracked, or previous repairs may have damaged the seats and threads. Many older valves also lack the pressure-balancing or thermostatic protection that modern codes require to help prevent scalding when water pressure changes suddenly.

Replacement is also common during remodels, when homeowners want a new trim style, a different finish or additional outlets like a handheld shower or body sprays. Because the valve body is connected to the supply pipes inside the wall, replacement requires access to the pipes behind it. Our plumbers plan that access carefully, choosing the least disruptive route and a new valve compatible with your existing piping, desired trim and wall depth.

Tile Access

Replacing a Shower Valve Without Retiling the Wall

The ideal access point is often behind the shower. If a closet, hallway or bedroom shares the wall, we can open the drywall on that side, replace the valve and patch the opening, leaving the tile untouched. Many older homes also have a small access panel behind the shower, installed specifically for valve service. Checking for these options first can save considerable time, mess and expense on tile repair and regrouting.

When access must come from the shower side, we cut a neat opening around the existing valve, just large enough to work. Oversized trim plates, often called remodel or cover plates, are designed to hide these openings and the marks left by old handles, especially when converting from a two-handle or three-handle valve. Choosing the new valve and trim together ensures the cover plate fully conceals the opening and sits flat against the tile.

Why Choose Us

Why Customers Choose Our Valve Replacements

Valve replacement is precise work inside a finished wall, and we plan every step carefully. Our licensed and insured plumbers look for rear access first, cut tile openings neatly when needed and select cover plates that hide the work. New valves are set at the correct depth for the trim, connected securely and pressure tested before the wall is closed. Benefits of Replacing an Old Shower Valve

A new shower valve provides modern anti-scald protection, helping prevent sudden temperature spikes when toilets flush or appliances run. It ends the cycle of hard-to-find parts and repeat repairs on worn valve bodies. Single-handle conversions simplify temperature control and update the bathroom’s look. New outlets add welcome comfort features like handheld showers, rain heads and body sprays. And proper installation keeps the connections inside your wall leak-free for many years ahead.

Pressure-Balance or Thermostatic Shower Valve?

Both pressure-balance and thermostatic valves help protect against scalding, but they work differently and offer different levels of comfort and control.

A pressure-balance valve senses changes in hot or cold water pressure and adjusts automatically to keep the mix steady. If someone flushes a toilet, the valve reduces hot water to match the drop in cold pressure. It’s affordable, reliable and the most common type found in homes.

A thermostatic valve senses actual water temperature and holds a precise setting, even as flow changes. It often allows separate control of volume and temperature and supports multiple outlets running at once. Thermostatic valves cost more but suit luxury showers, multi-head systems and households wanting precise comfort.

How Our Shower Valve Replacement Works

We inspect your current valve, check for rear access and discuss valve type, trim style and any new outlets you want.

You’ll receive a plan covering access, the new valve and trim, connection method and cost. On replacement day, water is shut off, access is opened from behind or through the tile and the old valve is removed. The new valve is positioned at the correct depth and connected to the supply lines.

The connections are pressure tested before the wall is closed. Access openings are patched, or the cover plate is installed over the tile opening. Trim and handles are fitted, temperature limits are set and every outlet is tested for flow, temperature stability and leaks before we wrap up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shower Valve Replacement Questions Answered

Have Any Question on Your Minds?
Must tile come off for a new valve?

Not always. Rear access through an adjoining wall avoids tile, and when tile access is needed, a cover plate can hide the opening.

It’s a pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve that limits sudden temperature changes, helping prevent scalding when water pressure shifts elsewhere in the home.

Yes. We replace the old valve with a single-handle model and use a large cover plate to conceal the previous handle openings.

Many replacements take half a day. Access, piping type and any wall patching can affect the total time needed to finish.

If you want precise temperature control or multiple outlets, thermostatic valves are excellent. Pressure-balance valves suit most standard showers well.
