Pool Heater Gas Line
Sized for High-BTU Heaters
Installing a gas pool or spa heater? Our licensed plumbers run gas lines sized for the heater’s large fuel demand, so it fires reliably and warms your water as quickly as it should.
Pool Heater Gas Line Installation Sized for Serious Fuel Demand
Gas pool heaters are among the largest fuel-burning appliances a home can have. Many residential models are rated at several hundred thousand BTUs per hour, which is often more than the furnace, water heater and range combined. They’re also usually installed at an equipment pad far from the meter. That combination of high demand and long distance means the gas line serving a pool heater frequently needs to be larger than any other line on the property.
When a pool heater line is undersized, the heater may fail to ignite, shut down on low pressure, run with a weak flame or soot up over time. Heating takes longer and the unit works harder. Our plumbers calculate the heater’s demand alongside your other appliances, measure the full route and size the pool heater gas line correctly. When the existing meter can’t supply the added load, we coordinate a meter upgrade with your gas utility.
Pool Heater Gas Line Services We Provide
We install and upgrade gas lines for pool heaters, spa heaters and combination systems on residential and commercial properties, coordinating with pool contractors, equipment installers and gas utilities on sizing, meter capacity, permits and inspections.
New Lines
Run correctly sized gas lines from the meter to pool equipment pads.
Line Upsizing
Replace undersized lines that cause ignition failures and frequent low-pressure shutdowns.
Spa Heaters
Supply gas to dedicated spa heaters and combined pool and spa systems.
Meter Upgrades
Coordinate larger meters with utilities when demand exceeds current capacity.
Propane Supply
Install propane lines and coordinate tank sizing with your propane supplier.
Heater Replacement
Reconnect replacement heaters and verify line size for new models.
Why Pool Heaters Usually Need Larger Gas Lines and Meters
Gas pipe sizing depends on three main factors: how much fuel the appliance needs, how far the gas has to travel and the pressure available. A pool heater combines very high demand with long runs to the equipment pad, often a hundred feet or more. As pipe length increases, friction reduces available pressure, so larger diameter pipe is needed to deliver the same volume. Small lines that work for a grill or fire pit can’t supply a pool heater.
Some installations use an elevated-pressure system, with a utility-approved higher-pressure meter and a regulator near the heater, allowing smaller pipe over long distances. Whether that’s available depends on your utility and local code. The meter itself must also handle the combined demand of every gas appliance on the property. We review all of these factors before installation, so your pool heater fires reliably and stays lit every time it’s called to heat.
Why Pool Owners Choose Our Gas Line Work
We size pool heater lines from the actual numbers, not rules of thumb. Our licensed and insured plumbers total your property’s gas demand, measure the true route length and use code sizing tables to choose the right pipe. We coordinate meter upgrades with utilities, work alongside your pool contractor’s schedule and bury lines properly to the equipment pad. Every installation is pressure tested, inspected and verified with the heater running at full fire.

Benefits of a Properly Sized Pool Heater Line
A properly sized gas line lets your pool heater ignite reliably and run at its full rated output, heating water as quickly as it was designed to. Correct pressure prevents nuisance shutdowns, sooting and premature wear on burners and heat exchangers. Spas reach soaking temperature faster. Other gas appliances in your home keep working normally while the heater runs. And professional installation supports the heater manufacturer’s warranty requirements for proper gas supply.
Pool Heater Gas Lines in CA, TX, FL
We install pool heater gas lines for homes, community pools and commercial properties throughout California, Texas and Florida, extending swim seasons and keeping spas ready for use in every season of the year.
Gas Pool Heaters Compared With Heat Pumps
Before running a new gas line, it helps to understand how gas heaters compare with electric heat pumps for heating pools and spas.
Gas heaters heat water quickly regardless of outdoor temperature, which makes them ideal for spas and for pools heated occasionally or on demand. Heat pumps pull heat from the surrounding air and are typically very efficient in warm climates, but they heat more slowly and lose efficiency as temperatures drop.
Many pool owners in warm regions use heat pumps for steady pool heating and gas for spas or quick warm-ups. Some combine both. Operating costs depend on local gas and electricity rates. Your pool professional can recommend a heater, and we’ll make sure the gas supply is ready for it.
How Our Pool Heater Gas Line Installation Works
We review the heater’s BTU rating and gas requirements, list your other gas appliances and measure the route to the pad.
You’ll receive a plan covering pipe size, materials, route, any meter upgrade and price. After an 811 locate request clears the yard for excavation, a ditch is dug to code depth for approved buried piping with tracer wire and bring a riser up at the equipment pad with a shutoff valve and sediment trap.
Before the ditch is filled, the new run must hold test pressure and pass any required inspection. With fuel flowing again, we attach the heater, check each fitting for leaks and verify gas pressure at the heater while it runs at full fire alongside other appliances, confirming the supply meets the manufacturer’s requirements.

Pool Heater Gas Line Questions Answered
Why won't my pool heater stay lit?
An undersized gas line or meter is a common cause, starving the heater of fuel at full fire. Other causes include heater component problems.
Will I need a larger gas meter?
Often. Pool heaters add significant demand, and the utility may need to install a larger meter if total load exceeds current capacity.
Can a pool heater run on propane?
Yes, with a propane-configured heater and an adequately sized tank and regulator. We coordinate tank sizing with your propane supplier.
How long does installation take?
Many pool heater lines are installed in one to two days, plus time for permits, inspection and any utility meter upgrade.
Can my old line serve a new heater?
Only if it’s sized for the new heater’s rating. Higher-output replacements often need a larger line, which we verify before connection.
