Assembly Replacement

Backflow Preventer Replacement
Compliant Protection Restored

Is your backflow assembly cracked, outdated or failing again and again? Our plumbers replace worn and obsolete backflow preventers with approved models, then test and report them for compliance.

When to Replace

Backflow Preventer Replacement When Repair Is No Longer the Answer

Many backflow assemblies can be rebuilt again and again, but some situations call for replacement. A body cracked by freezing or physical damage can’t be reliably repaired. Older assemblies may no longer appear on a utility’s approved list, or replacement parts may no longer be manufactured. Some units fail test after test even after rebuilding, often because of corroded internal surfaces or worn seats that rubber kits can’t correct. Theft also leaves owners needing a complete new assembly quickly.

Changes to a property can trigger replacement too. Converting a building to a new use, adding chemical-feed equipment or upgrading an irrigation system may raise the hazard level, requiring a higher-protection assembly. Expanding a building can make an existing assembly undersized. Utilities sometimes require relocating assemblies from below-ground pits to above-ground locations. Our plumbers handle backflow preventer replacement in each of these situations, selecting a compliant model, installing it correctly and completing the required test.

Replacement Options

Backflow Preventer Replacement Services We Offer

We replace backflow assemblies on irrigation, domestic and fire lines for homes, HOAs and commercial properties, including like-for-like swaps, hazard upgrades, relocations from pits and replacement of stolen or freeze-damaged units, always followed by certified testing.

Like-for-Like

Replace worn assemblies with current approved models of the same type.

Hazard Upgrades

Upgrade to RP assemblies when property use creates higher hazards.

Pit Relocation

Move assemblies out of below-ground pits to compliant above-ground locations.

Freeze Damage

Replace assemblies with cracked bodies from freezing weather events quickly.

Theft Replacement

Replace stolen assemblies quickly and add cages that deter future theft.

Size Upgrades

Install larger assemblies when building expansion increases water demand significantly.

Changing Requirements

When Hazard Changes or Utility Rules Require a Different Assembly

The assembly protecting a connection must match its hazard. A double check might be acceptable for a low-hazard connection, but if a property adds a chemical injector to its irrigation system, a commercial boiler or medical equipment, the hazard may rise to a level that requires a reduced pressure assembly. Water utilities review cross-connections periodically and may send notices requiring an upgrade when they identify a higher hazard or an assembly that’s no longer acceptable.

Utilities also update their standards for installation location and assembly approval. Assemblies in below-ground vaults may need to move above ground, where they can’t be submerged and can be tested easily. Older models may lose approval as standards evolve. When a notice arrives, we review the requirement, confirm the correct assembly type and size and plan the replacement to minimize disruption. We’ll explain what’s required and why, so the work is done right once.

Benefits of Timely Backflow Preventer Replacement

Replacing a failing or obsolete assembly restores reliable protection for your drinking water and the public supply. It ends the cycle of failed tests and repeat repair visits. Upgrading to the correct hazard rating keeps you compliant when property use changes. Modern assemblies can offer improved serviceability and lower pressure loss. And proper relocation, enclosures and freeze protection help your new assembly pass its tests and last longer over time.

Lead-Free Requirements for Drinking Water Assemblies

If your backflow assembly protects a drinking water line and was installed many years ago, it may contain more lead than today’s standards allow.

Federal rules that took effect in 2014 significantly reduced the allowable lead content in the wetted surfaces of pipes, fittings and fixtures used for drinking water. Backflow assemblies installed on potable water lines must meet these lead-free requirements, and manufacturers now produce fully compliant models for them.

Older brass assemblies installed before then aren’t automatically required to be removed, but replacement must use lead-free models. Assemblies used only for non-potable purposes, such as some irrigation systems, may be treated differently. We’ll confirm which requirements apply to your assembly and install compliant equipment.

How Our Backflow Preventer Replacement Works

We review your utility notice, failed test reports or damage, then confirm the required assembly type, size and final location.

We then quote the new assembly, any relocation work and optional enclosures. Once the permit is in hand, the supply is closed, the old assembly is removed and the new one is installed with proper fittings, height and clearance, along with drainage for any reduced pressure relief discharge.

The new assembly is flushed, checked for leaks and tested by a certified tester. Results are submitted to your water utility, and inspections are completed when required. We install cages or freeze protection if selected, dispose of the old unit and add the new assembly to your annual testing schedule.

Utilities may require upgrades when a connection’s hazard level increases, standards change or an older assembly model is no longer approved.

Yes. We relocate assemblies from below-ground pits to above-ground locations, which many utilities now require for all reduced pressure assemblies.

Lockable steel cages, secure anchoring and enclosures make theft far more difficult, especially at commercial properties with exposed, easily reached assemblies.

Yes. Every new assembly must be tested by a certified tester, with results submitted to your water utility before it’s accepted.
