Ice Maker Line Installation
Steady Supply, Clean Ice

Adding an undercounter ice machine, a freezer ice maker kit or a bar ice maker? Our plumbers install the water supply and, where needed, the drain connection your ice maker requires.

Beyond the Fridge

Ice Maker Line Installation for Standalone and Built-In Ice Machines

Ice makers come in more forms than the one inside a refrigerator. Undercounter ice machines in kitchens, wet bars, outdoor kitchens and home offices produce large amounts of clear ice and have very different plumbing needs. Older freezers can be fitted with add-on ice maker kits. Commercial ice machines in restaurants and offices often require filtered supply and dedicated drains. Each type needs a reliable cold water supply with an accessible shutoff valve close to the unit.

Many standalone ice machines also need a drain, which surprises people. Melted ice and purge water must go somewhere. Some units drain by gravity to a nearby floor drain or sink drain through an air gap, while others need a small drain pump to lift water when no drain sits below the unit. Our ice maker line installation service handles both the supply and drain sides, following the manufacturer’s requirements so your machine runs cleanly and reliably.

Drain Options

Gravity Drains and Drain Pumps for Ice Machines

Gravity drainage is the simplest option when a drain sits lower than the ice machine’s outlet. The unit’s drain line runs downhill to a floor drain, a standpipe or the sink drain, ending with an air gap or other approved indirect connection, so wastewater can’t flow back into the machine. Codes generally require this indirect connection for equipment that holds food or ice, since a direct connection risks contaminating the ice with drain water.

When no suitable drain sits below the unit, a drain pump solves the problem. Many ice machines offer a factory-installed or add-on pump that lifts water up and over to a higher drain, such as the kitchen sink drain or a nearby standpipe. The pump needs power and occasional cleaning. We evaluate your location, recommend gravity or pump drainage and install the connection to meet both code and the manufacturer’s specifications.

Why Choose Us

Why Customers Choose Our Ice Maker Installs

We plumb ice makers so they produce clean ice and drain without trouble. Our licensed and insured plumbers install proper tee fittings and quarter-turn valves, use durable braided or PEX supply lines and add inline filters when water quality calls for it. Benefits of Professional Ice Maker Installation

Professional installation ensures your ice maker gets steady water pressure and produces full, consistent batches of ice. Proper drain connections with air gaps keep wastewater away from the ice you serve. Inline filtration improves ice clarity and taste and reduces scale inside the machine. Quality fittings and valves prevent hidden leaks beneath counters and bars. And following the manufacturer’s installation requirements closely helps keep warranty coverage on your ice machine intact.

Why Filtered Water Makes Better Ice

The water feeding your ice maker directly affects how the ice looks and tastes, and how often the machine needs cleaning and descaling.

Chlorine and other tastes in tap water carry into ice and the drinks it chills. Hard water leaves mineral scale on evaporator plates and internal parts, which reduces ice production and can shorten the machine’s life. Sediment can also clog the small inlet water valves these machines rely on.

An inline filter designed for ice machines reduces chlorine taste, sediment and in some cases scale formation. Filters need replacing on schedule, usually every six months or so, depending on use. We’ll recommend filtration suited to your water quality, your usage and your ice maker manufacturer’s guidelines.

How Our Ice Maker Line Installation Works

We review the ice maker’s supply, drain and electrical requirements and inspect the location, nearby water lines and available drains.

With the supply closed, we cut a branch into the nearest cold pipe and add a quarter-turn shutoff. A protected supply line is routed to the unit, with an inline filter if selected. The drain is connected by gravity through an air gap, or a drain pump is installed when needed.

Once water is back on, fresh water runs through the new pipe to clear debris before the machine is attached. We inspect each connection under pressure, and the drain is tested by running water through it. We confirm the machine fills properly and starts producing ice, then explain filter changes and basic maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ice Maker Line Installation Questions Answered

Have Any Question on Your Minds?
Do undercounter ice makers need a drain?

Most do. Melted ice and purge water need to drain by gravity or through a pump to an approved drain connection.

A drain pump can lift water to a higher drain, such as the kitchen sink drain or a nearby standpipe connection.

It’s often recommended. Filters improve ice taste and clarity and reduce scale buildup that can lower production and damage parts.

Codes generally require an air gap or indirect connection, so drain water can’t back up into equipment that holds ice.

Most ice maker line installations take two to four hours, depending on supply routing, drain options and whether a pump is needed.
